Activity: Online Self-Presentation

Though you have only begun thinking about what your blogs will look like this semester, it’s never too early to begin thinking about self-presentation. Take 3-4 minutes to jot down thoughts about how you want to come across on your author page. Try to use the same kind of adjectives we used to describe the author of the blog we just talked about. If you get stuck, consider these questions. What kind of text are you writing? Who are your readers? Your answers to these questions (even if they change in the coming weeks) will help determine how you want to present yourself as an author.

Once you come up with at least 4 or 5 adjectives, brainstorm a list of 2 or 3 ways in which you can create this impression in your readers. Post your work in a comment on this post.

I would like to come across as knowledgeable yet humble, confident and stoic. I can create this impression with my readers by providing a picture of myself with a grim expression, hence creating the impression of stoicism. I can provide a restrained account of my credentials to appear knowledgeable while staying humble.

    -optimistic
    -knowledgeable/educated

My blog would be upbeat and lighthearted, but without sacrificing intellect for the sake of humor. I'd use common language in a way that readers could understand and relate to, define things in a way that brings pictures or emotions to the forefront of their minds and really makes them connect to the post. Creativity would come in through the blog design and in the ways in which I present information - while some may choose to appear resolute and stoic in their presentation of facts, I'd rather put a twist on it that either hasn't been seen before or will cause people to think of the subject matter in a new, and sometime more favorable, light.

    1. relatable
    2. funny
    3. adaptable

I need to use language that is not sophisticated so that people can easily relate to my posts without the material going straight over their head. Also, using images along with my posts will help show the happiness but also again make it more enjoyable and relatable to those reading it. I must also remember to keep an open mind while reading others comments and in my responses.

I hope to accomplish this by making my blog not only aesthetically pleasing, but also simple to navigate and comprehend--without, of course, sacrificing individuality. I also would focus on keeping variety in my different styles (writing, use of imagery and media, etc.) so that it keeps readers informed but also entertained at some level so that they want to keep reading.

I would use language that many people of varying education levels could relate to, keeping it fairly simplistic. I would also use a layout that is colorful and well put together so that my social characteristics come off along with my ability to put together a blog that is well thought out.
